Everybody, Meet Steve!

Hey Everybody meet the newest addition to our team; Steve!!  We are so thrilled to have him on board and and part of our superb crew. Here's a little about him in his own words:

Meet Steve Kirk:

I have always liked digging in the dirt, so I guess it makes sense that I went from archaeology to food.  The soil holds the past and the future in its delicate grip and the fragility of it's bounty is made clear in the archaeological record.  Digging through the past we see many societies falter as their agricultural systems breakdown. We also see how societies who managed their food systems well were ultimately successful, and it was this reality that first spawned my passion for food and how it goes from field to table.

Food is key to everything we do.  From our health, to our lifestyle, our energy, and even our worldview, food is the fuel.  With the world population creeping towards 7 billion, our food and how it was produced became a key interest in my life. An opportunity from a friend landed me at a large farmer's co-op doing simple office work, packing wholesale orders, and preparing Community Supported Agriculture boxes. Having worked in an environmental testing lab for several years, while studying Archaeology, it was a big change. But it also filled me with excitement for the opportunity to have an meaningful position in such a crucial system.  After only a couple months I was designing the internal standards for their Organic Egg program and dealing directly with over 60 farmers. Nothing quite compares to seeing produce, meat, and eggs go directly from the farm to a plate at a favorite restaurant, shelf at a local store, or in a box from your favorite delivery service.   I continue to learn, explore, find new amazing farmers, and still even manage to get my hands in the dirt every now and then.

I am delighted to introduce myself to Green Grocer customers.  I come to Green Grocer having done a little bit of everything in the local food system, from working directly with dozens of farms to helping chefs and retailers incorporate local products onto their menus and shelves. I hope to be with Green Grocer for many years to come, helping them find and distribute the highest quality, most responsibly produced food available.  I look forward to an exciting and fulfilling future with all those involved!
