Gift Giving that Gives Back

With our Gift Giving that Gives back program not only are you giving a wonderful gift to someone you know, but you'll be giving a gift to someone you probably don't know but who will greatly appreciate it. Washington's Green Grocer is donating 25% of all gift card/gift jar sales to DC Central Kitchen this holiday season. 

Two Hand-Crafted Options

We've come up with two fun, handcrafted options for giving.

For those of you who want something a little out of the box to put in a box, we have our Gift Card in a Jar pictured above. Inside the festively labeled mason jar are a sprig of boxwood, some dried berries and cinnamon sticks, along with a tag explaining how to redeem your jar for goods!  When it's opened, your gift recipient with be greeted with the scent of warm cinnamon and glad tidings. The jar comes inside of a clear cello bag tied with twine. These come in amounts of $25 (perfect for giving someone who already gets our goods) $50 (enough for a box and add ons) and $100.

For something to mail or have us mail, we have created a beautiful gift card on 6-inch circles with an ornament hanger on top. The card is put into a 4-petal envelope and  sealed with holiday ribbon (or we can give you the ribbon and sticker and you can seal it yourself). It then gets put into a white square envelope that we'll either include if we're delivering the cards to you with your delivery, or we'll put your gift card in it and mail it to the lucky recipient if you'd like us to do that for you.  These come in $25, $50 and $100 amounts, or you can have us customize it with an amount that you choose.

DC Central Kitchen turns leftover food into millions of meals for thousands of at-risk individuals while offering nationally recognized culinary job training to once homeless and hungry adults.

Our mission is to use food as a tool to strengthen bodies, empower minds, and build communities. Our programs provide a comprehensive continuum of care to the people we serve.

First, we provide breakfast, outreach, and counseling services to chronically homeless people living on the streets.

Next we recycle 3,000 pounds of food each day, converting it into 4,500 meals we distribute to 100 shelters, transitional homes, and rehabilitation clinics throughout the DC area. These partner agencies then refer clients to our Culinary Job Training program, where they receive the tools to start new careers.

We complete the empowerment process by employing our graduates in our full-service catering company or by placing them in full-time jobs at restaurants and hotels throughout the region. Today, we are expanding our operations, partnering with local farmers to procure fresh produce and begin newrevenue-generating social enterprises.
