Washington’s Firehook Bakery & Coffeehouse was established in December 1992 with one simple goal: quality. Since then, Firehook has been offering customers the best and most authentic bakery goods and coffee in their neighborhood.
Some of Firehook’s older customers will no doubt remember the first store, on Lee Street, one block up from the Old Town waterfront. And anyone who visited that store will recall the imposing wood-burning oven, which was brought from Spain by ship and built brick by brick.
To keep up with growing demand, Firehook moved to a larger building on Fayette Street in Old Town Alexandria in 1998. This new building offers more efficient space, larger refrigeration capabilities, and new equipment, including a new bread oven. In May 2001, Brian P. Murphy, a native Washingtonian and loyal customer coined the phrase “Washington Born, Washington Bread” to describe Firehook.
