McCutcheon's Apple Products
In 1938, at the age of eighty, William O. McCutcheon retired from the Colt & Dixon Canning Co. in Frederick, MD. Being an energetic and industrious man he was not ready to give up working. With the help of his son, Robert J. McCutcheon, and Robert’s wife, Helen, they purchased a used apple press for $25.00. They set the press up on a property in downtown Frederick, MD and began custom pressing apples for local farmers. As the years passed, they added the service of custom boiling the local farmers' apples into apple butter, using the farmers' recipes. (The above photo shows Rebecca (closest) and Helen(furthest) McCutcheon peeling apples all the way back in 1945!)
McCutcheon’s operation remained much the same until the 1950s, when they built more modern buildings to house their operations. At this time, McCutcheon’s produced Apple Cider and Apple Butter under their own label and began selling their products in a retail store attached to their factory and to other vendors around the area. To keep up with this added work, Robert and Helen enlisted their children's help - they spent their time outside of school helping the family business.
These children eventually stepped up to run the business - and in the 1960s, Robert J. McCutcheon Jr. and his brother William J. McCutcheon expanded the products McCutcheon’s produced to include preserves such as strawberry, blueberry and peach.
Today, McCutcheon’s is in the care of the fourth generation of McCutcheon’s - the sons and daughters of Robert and William McCutcheon. The present facility was built starting in 1993 and sits on the original site in Frederick, MD. They have more than 30 full-time employees - including 16 family members from 3rd, 4th and 5th generations! - all working together to bring you the world-famous McCutcheon’s homestyle taste and quality you’ve come to enjoy.
McCutcheon's has added many products to their beloved selection over the years, while staying committed to using the highest quality ingredients for their home recipes.
